| The two
groups came together in 1998 -- each with a need. The Lone Star
Cattle Dog Futurity (LSCDF) desired a specific personal/community
charitable cause.... and the East Texas Neuro Support Group (ETNSG)
required fund-raising assistance for its membership. The partnership that
developed has grown to the benefit of both groups.
Larry Innerarity has known Gary
Thornton long before he was involved in a trucking accident that left Thornton
paralyzed from the mid-neck area and dependent to a wheelchair for
mobility. Friends since childhood, they have maintained close ties since
the life-threatening injury to Thornton. When Innerarity was told that
the ETNSG needed help with fund-raising efforts since 1998, the LSCDF answered
their needs. What began as one friend helping another -- Larry and Gary's
lifelong friendship has spread to others.
Tom Hines, a farmer/rancher from
Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and LSCDF member, has also benefited from this
association. Hines, while in his early twenties, suffered a devastating
stroke -- and subsequent brain injury, limiting his physical mobility and
communication skills. Assistance by the ETNSG and LSCDF has allowed him
to communicate via a specialized computerized device (Message Mate), and to
participate in the LSCDF event as a Handler.
The LSCDF and ETNSG hope to enhance
the awareness of persons with disabilities via our association with the area
youth. At the same time, our primary message is to encourage our youth to
focus on their abilities -- reaching out in teamwork to all those in need
within our community.
